As some of you already know, I am very passionate about anything Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). I am so happy that there are institutions and businesses in Milwaukee that spread the awareness that VR/AR/MR is present in the city. Institution's such as Marquette University which houses MARVL, is a good example.
I had the opportunity to first visit MARVL about a year ago. And most recently, I was able to revisit the lab through Milwaukee VR's last Meetup event. The difference between both visits? There is now more content that the staff is working on and I was able to experience the new content at the meetup. I was able to take photos during the meetup event and they can be viewed here.
MARVL is basically a "Cave automatic virtual environment" aka "CAVE" that involves multiple projectors pointing at walls in a cube room setup. More information on MARVL's specific hardware can be found on the website. If you want to learn more about what a CAVE is, here is some reading.
The staff at MARVL also comprises of Marquette University students who help out with the creations. I am glad that there are opportunities in a college institution that allow it's students to get involved with VR. Though VR is not fully consumerized, it is definitely technology of the future with the possibility of creating new jobs!
While MARVL focuses on pushing the room scale VR setup and experiences, there are still head mounted displays (HMDs) that are used in the lab such as the Oculus Rift and also, most recently, the Microsoft HoloLens (my personal favorite, and I just got one as well!).
The VR presence in Milwaukee is small as of right now but it is definitely here. Talented people are creating in the VR space and these creations are amazing. I am keeping a close eye on VR/AR/MR in Milwaukee and my dream is that it becomes a prominent technology for the city!
